American Water Polo

American Water Polo

Different organizations govern water polo in the American water Polo. The majority of water polo competitions in the nation, including a mature competitions and national teams, are govern by the USA Water Polo (USAWP). High Schools are govern by the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS), Whereas Colleges are govern by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). There are no active Professional water polo leagues in America.

National Water Polo Teams

In international competitions like the Olympic games, world Aquatics championship FINA Water Polo World Cup, FINA Water Polo World League, and Pan American Games, the men’s and women’s national water Polo teams of the United States Compete.

Men’s National Team

Men’s national Water Polo team of the United States In international competitions. The American men’s national Water Polo team has garnered numerous medals. The United States reached its highest ever rating of No.2 in the FINA Water Polo World Rankings in 1988 and 2009.

Olympic Games

Statistics for the American men’s Water Polo Teams in the Olympics Since 1900, men’s Water Polo Competitions has been held at the Olympic Games. Of the 27 games, the US has taken Part in 22 of them.

Olympic Games

Only the men’s national Water polo team of the United States has won medals in the men’s Olympic Water Polo competitions 0utside of Europe. At the 1904 Olympic Games, In the men’s Water Polo Competition, the American team took home the gold, silver, and bronze medals (demonstration event). The team has won three silver medals and three bronze medals at the Olympic Games since 1904, respectively at the 1984,1988,and 2008 competitions. At the Olympic Games in 1920,1952,and 1922. The team like wise came in fourth place.

Other International Tournaments

Since 1973, men’s Water Polo competitions has been held at the FINA World Aquatics championships. The United States has participated in every game, but the team has yet to win any medals. The fourth Place result is the best (1986, 1991, and 2009). (Note: European squads have won all awards in the men’s water polo tournaments.)

In 1979, the FINA Men’s Water Polo World Cup was create.15 out of 16 competitions have seen participation from the United States. The team won the 1991 and 1997 FINA Men’s Water Polo World Cup, becoming the only non-European squad to win the FINA Men’s Water Polo World Cup. The team also came in second place in 1979 and 1985. In addition, the team finished in fourth place seven times (1981, 1983, 1987, 1993, 1995, 2010, and 2014).

In 2002, the FINA Men’s Water Polo World League was establish. 17 out of 18 competitions have seen Participation from the United States. The team finished in second place twice (2008 and 2016), third place once (2003), and fourth place seven times (2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2017).

Since 1951, men’s Water Polo competitions have been held at the pan American Games. In all 18 competitions, the US team has competed and eared medals. Since 1995, the team has won seven gold medals (1995, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019).

Women’s National Team

In the 1970s, the United States fielded a women’s national Water Polo team. The Women’s Squad rose to Prominence two decades later, becoming among the best in the world. The Squad has consistently held the top spot in the FINA Water Polo World Ranking since 2014.

Olympic Games

For the Olympic Games in 2000, a Women’s Water Polo competition was add. Since then, the US has taken past in every match.

The US Women’s Water Polo team is the only one to have competed in all five Olympic competitions and to have taken home two gold medals (2012,2016). The team also taken home two Silver medals from the Olympic competitions in 2000 and 20008.

Other International Tournaments

Since 1986, Women’s Water Polo competitions have been held at the FINA world Aquatics championships. The United States has participated in every game and captured six world championship titles (2003, 2007, 2009, 2015, 2017, and 2019). The group came in second Place in 2005 as well.

In 1979, the FINA Women’s Water Polo World Cup was create. Every competition has seen participation from the United States. The group has won the FINA Women’s Water Polo World Cup in 1979, 2010, 2014, and 2018. In addition, the team finished in second place five times (1980, 1983, 1984, 1989, and 2002).

In 2004, the FINA Women’s Water Polo World League debuted. Every competition has seen participation from the United States. The group has won the Champion Ship 13 times. Today, there are only three tournaments in which the United States participated but still needs to receive a gold medal.

Since 1999, Women’s Water Polo competitions have been held at the Pan American Games.  In each of the Six competed and earned medals. Since 2003, the team has won five gold medals (2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019).

NCAA

An annual competition to crown the national champion of NCAA men’s collegiate Water Polo is know was the NCAA Men’s Water Polo championship. It has been held every year since 1969, with the exception of 2020, when the Covid-19 epidemic force a postponement to March 2021. All male teams, regardless of their affiliation with Division1, Division2, Division 3, are qualified to participate in the National collegiate tournament each year because there aren’t many NCAA Water Polo programs at the national level. The tournament was expand from a four-team bracket in 2013 by adding two play-in games contest by the bottom four seeds, effectively creating a six-team frame with a first-round bye for the top two teams.

NCAA

While teams from all across the country frequently compete in the tournament, the majority of Programs  are in California. Schools outside California have yet to reach third place or participate in the NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship game.

The four Pac-12 institution in California have had the greatest success. The University of California, Berkeley, is the most successful program with 15 titles, followed by UCLA with 12 tags. Stanford (11 labels), and USC (10 tags). Since 1988, one of these four colleges has won the title each year.
