As temperatures begin to rise and the region heads into another hot Alabama summer, local pools are preparing to welcome thousands of swimmers — but they can’t operate without one essential ingredient: certified lifeguards. To address an ongoing shortage and keep the community safe, the Aquatics Center is once again offering lifeguard training courses designed to equip new lifesavers with the skills they need to respond to aquatic emergencies.

Lifeguard Certification Saves Lives — Literally

“The lifeguard certification course is a training and certification course taught by a certified American Lifeguard USA instructor,” said Masika-Joy Peifer, Aquatics Manager.

“It prepares potential lifeguards to prevent, protect and respond to aquatic emergencies.”

The course is open to individuals aged 15 and older. Students must turn 15 by the last day of class — no exceptions.

The blended learning course combines an online component with in-person sessions to maximize flexibility and practical experience.

Course Schedule – April 2025

Online module begins: April 14 (must be completed before in-person sessions)

In-person training:

April 25: 5:00 PM – 8:30 PM (skills assessment)

April 26: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM

April 27: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Students must attend all sessions and bring their own lunch for the weekend sessions. A refrigerator and microwave will be available onsite.

Skills Assessment Requirements

To proceed with the full training and certification, participants must first pass a skills test on April 25, which includes:

A 300-yard continuous swim using freestyle and breaststroke

A timed retrieval drill involving a 10-pound brick and a 25-yard swim on the back

A 2-minute tread with no hands allowed

Cost: $250 (only due upon passing the initial skills test — no charge or refund if failed).
Registration opens March 24 in person at the Aquatics Center.
Note: Students must have post access to attend the class.

Drowning Is a Public Health Crisis

According to the nonprofit Stop Drowning Now, drowning remains a top preventable cause of death in the U.S.:

An average of 3,500 to 4,000 people drown each year

That’s 10 deaths per day

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children aged 1 to 4

Lifeguards are not just pool monitors — they are front-line emergency responders who prevent tragedy. This course is part of the broader mission to reduce these alarming statistics across both Redstone Arsenal and the greater Huntsville community.

Why This Course Matters Now More Than Ever

Widespread demand: Lifeguards are in short supply across public and private facilities.

Employment opportunities: The City of Huntsville Parks & Recreation, Madison County Commission, and dozens of local community pools are actively hiring.

Competitive pay: Huntsville lifeguard wages range from $12.20 to $16.61/hour, depending on hours and qualifications.
